Alford Signal Box

View looking towards Whitehouse, from a colour slide taken by Norris Forrest in the 1960s. Several GNS signals survived at Alford until final closure in 1965. To the left of the platform starter is the signal box. The line to Kintore curved away to the left behind the box. To its right was the loco shed, by then devoid of its roof. A couple of coal wagons can be seen unloading, the local coal merchant being one of the last to use the line. The goods yard itself was on the right of the photographer. To his left the platform road and run-round loop were still in use to enable goods trains to be made up ready for departure. See also photograph 868.
